On my mind

  • Mallory

Oh. my. gawsh. I need this. I have to have it.... mainly because it's my namesake and I rarely see it outside of my own signature, but also because its gorrrrrrg! Loving their new stuff, too! I did a post about Dannijo a looong while ago and it's safe to say they are one of my favorite fashion lines ever. I wouldn't mind showing off some samples for them either :) The pieces after the Mallory necklace are just some that I think are pure perfection as well.

  • New Project

I have been looking for a new dresser for a long, long time and I recently came across this consignment store here in Dallas and within seconds of walking in I found this gem. It was on sale, too, for $100! I used to have a dresser like this and my current desk is a painted blue version of this style, so I was really excited for this find :) I wanted to paint it black to uniform my bedroom but I couldn't pass up a chance to finally use Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, so I chose to paint it her darkest color, Graphite. I did two layers and I am in love. When I finish attaching my lucite knobs from Anthropologie I will for sure post more pictures! The feeling of my place finally coming together the way I envision it is just so fun and relieving :)

  • Art of the Day

Inspired by the fact that my students were producing some amazing ceramic pieces and I was just sitting there bored, watching them, because they didn't want my help anymore.. that sounds like a bad thing but it isn't :) A few pieces broke off if you couldn't tell. I shall use it as some sort of jewelry or coin dish in my house! Or give it away... also I think I will make a bunch of pieces and post my improvement.

  • GemJunkie

It has been a long time coming for this post and I must send my sincerest apologies to my friend Kelly over at GemJunkie for being so late!

The story is that I follow her on instagram and she posted these BEAUTIFUL earrings that I had to have! So I left a comment and she ended up sending these to me for free in exchange for a post! What a deal! Now, everytime I wear them I literally get compliments all day long and I actually have been meaning to buy another pair! I'll pay this time, I promise! :) Please check out her great etsy store and follow her on insta! (see below)

Quick aside: School is almost out which means I will be much better on writing posts!!!!! Get excited for some awesome topics!

Also, my first picture above features the earrings atop my new favorite magazine, Kinfolk, that I am like still drooling over while that was like issue number 7 and they are like on issue.... well 8, but still! It's an amazing artsy contribution magazine that just rocks :)

  • SXSW 2013

I am sure most of you have heard about SXSW. If not, where have you been? Go look at the site. Regardless, I happen to have the privilege of having my Spring Break consistently coincide with SX for the past...3 years or so and by coincide, I mean it lines up with the music week. Bully for me. I happen to also always meet up with some good friends who are way more into music than myself and always know what is going on/down in Austin. Bully for me, again.

I will admit that this year I did not get as crazy or go out as much, but I made some notes on what I saw and liked and thought I would share. In case you missed what I wrote about last year, here it is. Moving forward, now! Below are my highlights.

    PHOX

    Pickwick

Look at the girl on the right just looking right at me?! Um, hello! Local Natives was playing!! Pay attention!

    What cheeseballs we are. Geez.

The bands pictured above were my favorite bands I saw that I did not know about prior to seeing them.

My favorite parties were the IFC and HGTV parties.

And the other pictures are just from people watching and experiencing the scene. I realize now, that as a fashion and art blogger I should have taken pictures of... people's outfits. But I get distracted and never realize until I leave that I didn't take any pictures of that. These are a few notes I took on what I saw:

    Sneakers.

(some good and purposeful and some with high socks and ankle tights under dresses. Gross)

    Navajo printed everything.

More cross body bags than I could count.

    Long flowy dresses.

    Exposing bras.

(And sometimes not cute ones but exposing nonetheless under sheer tops)

    --

One thing I overheard that I thought was pretty funny: "I am just embracing the hate this year and surprisingly having a good time!" Aren't we all, man? Aren't we all.

  • Art of the Day

It's been a while, peeps! I know, I know.. that is purely my fault! I do have some interesting insight on SXSW that I haven't blogged about yet (and you're thinking that was like 6 weeks ago buuut I don't care) I still want to tell you what I saw!

Today's post is about my students! If you didn't know, I teach high school. We recently had a little show at the Nasher Sculpture Center, one of my all time favorite places, and won some awards! Including $500 for art supplies and 1st place! SO so proud of my little Art Club babies. Here is their piece that about 14 kids collaborated on. Made out of all found objects found outside during a community service pick-up. Pretty neat, right?

  • Here Kitty

One thing that I completely swear by and has served me well in all seasons is leopard printed footwear. I have all of the shoes below and wear them out enough to keep ordering in many different forms. I don't do brown. I just don't. I have one pair of Betsey Johnson pumps that are brown with lime green piping (they sound awful, I know, but they are cute) and I STILL NEVER wear them. Leopard is the only brown I will do. And I know that is werid considering it is at least like 3 shades of brown but still... it's different to me. And I love LOVE patterns so there is our compromise. Below is a glimpse of my leopard printed collection:

    Spring/Summer

    Zigi Mexicali

    Spring/Summer/Fall

    Jay Litvack

    Fall/Winter

    Sam Edelman

Today, in fact, I am not wearing any of the above! It's Friday. And I am tired. And rocking these babies! Hey ohh!!!

    _____

These are not the Betsey Johnson pumps I was referring to early. Yowza.

    Have a great weekend :)

  • Green Planet Blue

This maxi dress from Planet Blue is the crowning mix of your grandmother's curtains (if she lived in Florida at an old people commune/retirement home and played bridge every other Thursday donning her florescent pink vizor) and oozing sex appeal. And if you're wondering how in the heck those work together, wonder no more! It has multiple slits, 4 to be exact, a great pattern and long sleeves; the most awkward combo on paper but surprisingly manifested perfectly through PB's new "western coast" collection. Other than the flowy-ness (which the west coast CLAIMS they have a monopoly over) I don't see it only being worn over there, making me wish they named their new collection "All Coasts Welcome - We Won't Discriminate Over Which Parts of the US of A You Live Just Buy Our Shit". Sold. I'm sold. And got paid today. Bully for me and those who get to see me wearing this beaut.

  • Learning Is Cool! (insert thumbs up here)

I recently learned two new things: what a Cupid's Bow is (in reference to lips) and how much I love ponchos. The picture below of me (awkward!!!!) was taken at work and was the moment I decided I looked freaking amazing in my brand new poncho/blanket. Isn't it pretty? Agree with me. Always.

After taking and seeing this picture, I decided that the points in my top lip HAD to be called something so I googled it and saw that that area is scientifically known as the Cupid's Bow. ALSO after seeing this picture, I decided that there was an uncanny resemblance between me and Winifred, the elderly witch sister in one of my all-time favorite childhood movies, Hocus Pocus. Un. Canny.

You can't tell I'm wearing a poncho you say? Trust me. And let's just let the fashion models do their job and show you some awesome poncho-wearing skills herehere and here.

This is the lipstick I am wearing.

Some pretty cool triangle necklaces can be found here.

Another one of my favorite childhood movies that I didn't know was laced in sexual content can be found here. Not that Hocus Pocus was sexy... Well maybe that scene with young SJP and the zombie... Yikes!
